Quality of life and the youth of a population are two of the more important ingredients of a successful community. It is one of the goals of the Mason Optimist Club to promote and serve those needs. In the spring of 1998, the Club, through a near unanimous vote by its membership, decided to pursue the skate park project to satisfy a need for improved park facilities. The Club formulated a plan, generated a proposal, and received approval from the City Planning Commission and the City Council to proceed with the project. The Club partnered with the City in this endeavor, with the City agreeing to give the Club land for the project, and to manage and administrate the park when it was finished.
An important first step in the process was the Club suggesting and helping the City revise its Recreation Plan for 2000-2005, such that the City would qualify for a State-matching fund program (Clean Michigan Initiative Funds). Through the Optimist International “Turn Around Grant Program” the Club was successful in obtaining a substantial contribution from the Dart Foundation which gave the project a major jump start. Other major donors include The Mason Optimist Club, Aggie Corner, Dart National Bank, 5th 3rd Bank, Snow Brothers Concrete, and of course, a major matching contribution to those funds from the City of Mason. Those local funds were complemented by a successful award of the Clean Michigan Initiative Grant by Governor Engler in January of 2001 which provided 49% of the funding.
The $375,000 project broke officially broke ground on May 14, 2002 and was opened to the public on October 8, 2002. The park has been immensely popular with our membership and the community. The facility is a “destination” point both regionally and nationally, ranking as one of the top parks in the State, and among the top 100 skate parks in the nation. This is truly a quality facility brought on by community involvement and cooperation. Mason can be proud.
